Meet Katie

This week, Katie Bunton invited us into her Byron Bay home. Coastal, minimalist and natural, it’s a beautiful space that is all about making memories for her twin boys and extended family. We sat around her Otto Extension Dining Table for a chat.

Can you tell us a bit about your family and how they inspire your home design choices? How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I have twin boys who are three years old now. Our time together at the dinner table is so precious and impactful.  Due to how important family meals are, I love having furniture that is durable for lots of use and also functional so we can fit as many of our loved ones around the table as possible!

What do you love about IconByDesign? What makes the furniture a great addition to your home?

My absolute favourite thing about IconByDesign is the impressive quality matched with timeless simplicity in its  Scandinavian design.

What attracted you to the Otto Extension Dining Table and Henrik Dining Chairs from IconByDesign and how does it complement your styling projects?

I love how beautiful and grand our Otto Extension Dining Table is! It immediately elevated our dining space. The extension functionality was also very important to us as we have a big family and love having as many of our loved ones to break bread with us as possible.

You are from the USA. How has your home style changed since moving to Australia, if at all?

My design style has become more daring and fun since moving to Australia. I love investing in beautiful pieces like the ones from IconByDesign because they have perfect minimalist designs from where I can add my own flair and decor to make each piece my own.

You recently moved to Byron Bay. Has this move changed your home design style since living in the city? How do timeless, sustainable IconByDesign pieces fit into this?

Our move to Byron Bay has allowed a very fun and creative opportunity with so much extra space to work with. I try to pick pieces that are more coastal and minimalist than urban and edgy and love keeping it light, fun and interesting.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of creating your family home?

Creating beautiful spaces for our family to make memories has been so special.  I know how much everyone loves coming home to this place that really feels like it reflects our personality and values.

Which room in your home was your favourite to create?

My favourite room has been my kitchen and living area as it had some features like the blue splashback that forced me to think outside the box!  It is also the room we spend the most time in hanging out and bonding.

How do you incorporate sustainable and Scandinavian-inspired design choices into your home and DIY projects? How does the quality and design influence your choices?

My absolute favourite thing about Scandinavian-inspired designs is that they are timeless and minimalistic. They celebrate the beauty of wood and natural materials. They speak to who you are and that’s why I love styling my home with them.
